Ans – Ivan realized Makar was the real murderer when Makar said: “The killer must be the one whose bag had the knife. Nobody could put it there while you slept without waking you.” This proved Makar knew details only the killer would know.
12. What were Ivan’s feelings about Makar when he became certain that it was, he who had killed the merchant?
When Ivan realized Makar was the real killer, he first felt very angry and wanted revenge. But later, when Makar confessed and asked for forgiveness, Ivan forgave him completely. This made Ivan feel peaceful inside, letting go of his anger.

What were the events that led to Ivan’s arrest ?
Ans – Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov was a prosperous merchant living in Vladimir. One summer, he decided to travel to a fair. On his way, he met another merchant, and they stayed overnight at the same inn. The next morning, after Aksionov had left, the other merchant was found murdered. Suspicion fell on Aksionov because a blood-stained knife was discovered in his bag. Despite his protests of innocence, no one believed him. The police considered the evidence too strong and arrested him. His appeals and cries were ignored, and eventually he was falsely convicted and sent to Siberia, where he spent 26 years in prison.
Describe the meeting between Ivan and his wife in the jail.
Ans – Ivan’s wife visited him in jail after he was imprisoned for the crime he did not commit. When they met, she was in great distress and cried, pleading with him to tell the truth about the murder. She asked if he was truly innocent, as she had always believed in his goodness. Ivan, deeply hurt by the suspicion in her eyes, wept and hid his face in his hands, feeling the weight of her doubt. Their meeting was brief, and soon the warder came to tell her that the time was over. Ivan felt despair, thinking that even his wife had lost faith in him.
How did the jail authorities come to know that someone had been digging a tunnel under the jail wall? How did the enquiry end?
The jail authorities discovered that someone had been digging a tunnel under the jail wall when they found a heap of earth near the wall. The authorities were suspicious and started an inquiry. They began questioning the prisoners, and eventually, Makar Semyonich, one of the new convicts, confessed that he was the one who had been digging the tunnel. However, he had only dug it for the purpose of escaping. The inquiry revealed that Makar’s actions were responsible for the digging, but the authorities did not take further action as Makar’s intention was not malicious toward the prison but rather to escape.
